As a Medical Laboratory Scientist, you help patients without ever seeing their faces; instead you see their blood, urine, stool, semen, mucus and cells. You manage specimens through state-of-the-art instrumentation, as well manual reads of slides and more! Consistency and accuracy are key in this role. Medical Laboratory Scientists can work in many settings, including outpatient medical clinics and hospitals. A Medical Laboratory Scientist can work as a generalist, in all areas of a lab, or they can specialize in hematology, chemistry, microbiology or another discipline.
Description
Primary duties and responsibilities include performing routine clinical laboratory testing, including pre-analytical, analytical, post-analytical, and general activities to support patient care. The position is a generalist in chemistry, immunoassay, coagulation, hematology, blood bank, microbiology with associated molecular applications, and urinalysis.
Typical Requirements:
- This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in biological, physical, chemical science, or Medical Laboratory Science/ Medical Technology.
- Certification as a medical laboratory scientist/medical technologist or equivalent; MLS or MT Certification.
- Skills and knowledge to support performing a full range of laboratory testing in a highly complex testing environment. .
- Ability to interpret quality control results and take corrective action as needed.
- Ability to accurately perform laboratory testing at a pace to support prescribed turnaround times.
- Ability to work independently, recognize problems, and take action.
- Ability to actively communicate problems/ suggest resolution with co-workers, Director of Laboratory Services/ Vendor representative, etc.
- Ability to operate testing instrumentation, including using the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, staff, physicians, and the public.
- Assists with managing supply and reagent inventory to support timely patient care.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 2-3 years experience working in a clinical laboratory performing high-complexity testing.
