A Sterile Processing Technician receives, cleans, prepares, sterilizes, and stores supplies, instruments and equipment for use with invasive procedures. In this role, you must have a critical eye for detail and you can’t cut corners. Soiled instruments must be scrubbed, washed, sterilized and packaged for re-use. Depending on the setting and facility size, a Sterile Processing Technician can work autonomously or as a part of a team. This role occurs behind the scenes, but is essential in providing safe, quality healthcare to patients.

Description

Receives, cleans, prepares, sterilizes, and stores supplies, instruments and equipment for use with invasive procedures.

Typical Requirements: 

  1. Graduate of Medical Assistant Program or equivalent work experience.
  2. Knowledge of central supply policies and procedures and medical practices.
  3. Knowledge of sterilization techniques.
  4. Knowledge of safety and sanitation practices, as defined by current OSHA guidelines.
  5. Skill in using sterilization equipment.
  6. Skill in gathering, reporting, and classifying information.
  7. Ability to operate department machinery.
  8. Ability to work with varying schedules and workloads.
  9. Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time efficiently.
  10. Ability to take initiative, be self-directed, problem solve, and work independently.
  11. Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures.
  12. Ability to communicate effectively both in written and oral form.
  13. Ability to utilize computer programs expected for patient care, access patient information online, and type at least 30 wpm.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  1. Graduate of an accredited medical assistant or central sterilization technician program.
  2. Two years experience as a medical assistant or central sterilization experience, preferably in an acute care setting.
  3. CSPDT certification preferred.
  4. Current CPR certification.

Pay Ranges

Base Hourly: $19 per hour
Annual: $40000 – $56000
